Fuck this, I'm getting Disgaea...

Tue Oct 27, 2009, 12:33 AM
Final Fantasy Tactics is a fantastic game.

And right now, it makes me want to chuck my PSP at a wall.

"Oh, haha, she must be having trouble with the game," you think. No. No.

I just learned that you can't steal from Elmdor.

What. The. Hell. WHATTHEHELL?! WHY? No, you know, I don't care why. It sucks. It's such a little thing, too. I don't care about Elmdor's crap equipment. I don't want it. It's... it's... I don't even know why it makes me so mad.

No, actually, I do know why it makes me so mad. Once upon a time, when Final Fantasy Tactics was for the Playstation, and there was none of this "Advance" crap, and the translators weren't spelling the word "magick" like retards, there was a boss named Elmdor. Elmdor was hard, even without his pair of minions that could one-shot you. He had the best defensive ability in the game: Shirahadori... Blade Grasp. Shirahadori is badass. Almost game-breakingly badass. It basically takes your Brave stat and makes you that much harder to hit. Combine that with the fact that a thief's Steal abilities have a low chance to succeed anyway, and you have 0% chance to steal from Elmdor. You don't have a very nice chance of hitting him with anything else, either.

So stealing from this guy was a very complicated affair. To steal his entire set of equipment - did I mention that his entire set of equipment is unique? - you needed a damn fine thief with every steal ability, a character that could lower Elmdor's Brave to a point where said thief even had a chance (about 20% per hit, maximum), and an entire party that could do all of this without getting raped by Elmdor and his assassins (who, once killed, then turn into demons who can use a spell which is also only learnable here, and perhaps only a handful of other times.) Sure, you could bring in an Arithmetician and wipe the floor with Elmdor with a single Holy, but to steal his stuff... now that was an achievement! (Well, it was for me. I worked out how to do it all by myself, and managed it after trail and error.)

I completed this battle and in the process made off with all of Elmdor's unique equipment (though not the powerful Ultima spell, which only the main character can learn by being hit by it and surviving. The damn demon jst wouldn't use it....) It was a crowning moment of awesome. I didn't realize just how much I was looking forward to this until I got there, tried and failed twice, and looked it up just to find out that it's not even possible anymore.

This is what I've been training my group for this entire game. That's how much I was looking forward to it. It's really disappointing.

At least there's still Midlight's Deep. Too bad they changed the cool backwards names to stuff that makes sense. :/

I hope Phantom Brave comes out for PSP, so I never have to look at this game again. Maybe I'll just get Disgaea.

The death of an era for me. I'll be shocked if Square ever has another good game. (Well, FFT was the only game of theirs that I thoroughly enjoyed to begin with....)
